Winter 2023 Newsletter

We want to say a huge thank you for all your support over the last year. We couldn't do what we do without people like you who come to our events, advertise our work and give financially. Keep reading to find out about what has been happening at Hope English School, over the last few months.

“I learn so many things. I learn how to use computer device and I learn online shopping. Now I can use so many things and I am happy”
— Digital Skills Student

The Autumn term saw us being able to expand the classes we run from the Hope English School office. We are now able to offer two ESOL courses, and a Digital Skills course which is just fantastic. These courses are open to all refugees or people seeking asylum and we have had a lovely group of students over the last term. It has been so encouraging to see how they have formed relationships with one another, as well as making great progress with their language learning.

“I will (be able to) integrate into the country to work in the future, and (I am able) to speak English very well”
— Community ESOL Student

We are delighted to have partnered with some new organisations and for the first time will be working alongside two foodbanks in the city, these classes begin in January and we are really looking forward to expanding our work and hopefully reaching more people who need our services.

Alongside this we have started to work with the charity Ashiana, to offer one-to-one support to one of their clients.

After successfully receiving grant funding, we are now able to provide more classes for our students living in the bridging hotel in Sheffield.

We are excited to start our first "family learning" class, where parents can bring their children with them and learn together! We hope this new style of class will help us to provide teaching to those parents who struggle to access our current provision, due to childcare needs, as well as offering something for children and young people who have not yet been provided with school places.

“The teacher teaches very well and is very kind”
— Hotel ESOL Student

New year - new challenge?

Back in September our team of six runners took on the Sheffield 10k and raised £1293 for Hope English School. It was a fantastic team effort and we want to say a huge THANK YOU to TEAM HOPE (aka Katy, Jane, Lucy, Josie, Sam and Connor) for absolutely smashing our fundraising target!

Why not make 2024 the year you take on a challenge like this one? If you are thinking about taking up running in 2024, why not join our team and turn your training into something really meaningful?

Thank you!

THANK YOU to everyone who came along to our wreath workshop and all those who bought raffle tickets - the event raised £450 which is fantastic!

The money raised at these events goes to support students like Arina* a lady who, because of learning needs, is unable to join a typical ESOL class. Events such as this one allow us to pay a teacher to work with her one-to-one, at a pace that suits her, to help her learn English skills and integrate into her new community.

We all had a fabulously festive time, and I'm sure you agree came away with some absolutely stunning wreaths. Huge thanks to Violets and Daisies florists for running the event for us and to everyone who donated raffle prizes, we plan to do it all again next Christmas!

We are delighted to welcome Caroline to the Hope English School Team!

Welcome to Caroline who has joined us as a volunteer classroom assistant.

Caroline has taught German language and German cultural studies for many years at the University of Sheffield and after deciding to take a year out, she wanted to be of practical help to people seeking refuge in Sheffield.
We are absolutely delighted to have Caroline as part of the team, her experience and kindness are an asset to every classroom she assists in.

Happy new year and thank you for your ongoing support!
